 Posted: Wed Feb 04, 2015 1:11 am    Post subject: Two-Dimensional Trajectories An electron is shot through a magnetic field with an initial velocity of 100ft/sec. The magnetic field accelerates it in the perpendicular (normal) direction with a constant velocity of 1000ft/sec. If the magnetic field has a depth of one foot; How long does it take the electron to traverse the field? How much is the deflection from the straight path through the field?

For the first part since vertical and horizontal velocities are independent, t = distance/speed 1ft/(100ft/sec) = 1/100 sec. Assuming you mean the field accelerates with an acceleration of 1000ft/sec^2. Then s = u*t + 0.5 a*(t^2) since u is initially zero in the y-direction. s = 0.5 *1000*(1/100)^2 = 0.05 ft.
