I know that if you hold a plumbline (or any object by a thread) near a mountain it will be pulled towards it. However, what happens if instead of a mountain, you are standing near a giant hole in the ground? Also what would happen if you held the plubline actually over the hole? Any information is much appreciated.

the plumbline will be vertical. Since the would be only one force the weight of the bob.
You could throw in the the force due to the mass of the hole,s wall but their resultant you be zero.
Hope that will help you.
